What is a living shoreline?
A living shoreline uses natural elements, and sometimes structural parts such as rock sills, to control erosion while restoring marsh habitat. At West Pond in Jamaica Bay the project restored 2,400 linear feet of shoreline and planted 200,000 native grasses and shrubs.
Has Galvin Brothers restored marsh islands in Jamaica Bay?
Yes. In March 2006 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded Galvin Brothers the $13 million Elders Point (East) Island restoration, the first full-scale marsh island restoration in Jamaica Bay, restoring about 70 acres of marsh.
